About ME
Coming from the small state of Delaware, Custo is an artist that stands out from the rest. Born Jacques Evans April 2,1982 in Wilmington, DE. Having the same name as famous explorer Jacques Cousteau, is how the neighborhood gave him the nickname “Cousteau”, which he spells Custo. He is very consistent with creating that wow factor to get people to acknowledge his place in the music scene. He was the first Delaware artist to launch a promotional tactic that included regional T.V. commercials. He had a commercial on T.V. viewed by millions advertising the release of his first solo LP Real vs Fake. He was also the only Delaware artist to have a album placed in F.Y.E. music stores in 2009. The rap style of Custo is more like a mix between Young Jeezy and Nas. The Jeezy side is the trap/hustle talk that he spits on tracks. He also has been involved in the drug trade on a major level in his past. The Nas side is how all his songs have a concept and some sort of substance or storytelling. He always seems to have a message and knowledge on a street and life level in his rhymes. He has performed on stages with major names such as Jadakiss, Gillie da Kid, Cassidy, Papoose, just to name a few. XXL magazine had him in a featured article twice. He has been in Hip-Hop weekly in the next to blow section also. Custo rhymes about the struggle and oppression that most black, low income families deal with. He doesn’t talk about drug dealing to glorify it but, yet he explains that this is what he was exposed to and as a way to help his mother with some of the load. “Parents where I’m from struggled”. “So if we started hustling, not needing help from moms, and at the same time help her out, that’s what we did”. “I’m from a neighborhood (Brookmont Farms) 10 minutes outside of Newark but, in Delaware your address is whatever city your closest to”.
“Newark is a college town made up of 90% white middle-class families”. “Brookmont is 70% black and its residents are below the poverty line, that’s why we say its totally different than Newark and we don’t call it Newark, DE but instead Brookmont, DE”. “My moms house got raided for her drug dealing, my house has been shot up, I have been shot at, I have shot at people, I have been robbed”. “This is the life I been seeing all my life so that’s going to come out in my rhymes”. “If I make a song that sounds like its promoting violence, just listen closely, its always a method to my madness”. “Its always a real legitimate reason for anything I do, and I always explain that in my rhymes”. Custo doesn’t rap with the typical east coast sound with a lot of metaphors and punchlines like most of the artists in his area. He focuses more on telling his life story and experiences with raw, straight to the point lyrics like in bars such as “Mad at me, my J-O-B/ Paper trail I keep discreet/ they just mad cause they cant see/ What I make all through the week/ Mind ya own get off my cheese/ Strategies to feed my needs/ Don’t want yours so you can keep/ $500 every two weeks/ That’s not enough to keep some heat/ That’s why we hustle so them ends can meet/ Ya’ll feed them kids in that country/ Its kids hungry right on my street”. “I want to do the total opposite of what everybody else does”. “If I see everybody wear polo I’ll wear Coogi, if I see everybody getting gold chains with their label on it, I wont”. Its almost like I’m programmed to not do what everybody else is doing”! “I’m a trendsetter I never follow the in thing”!
